Should I Rekey or Replace the Locks After Moving?

June 24, 2026 Greenlaw Lock and Key

Most people should rekey the locks after moving unless the hardware is damaged, outdated, or not secure enough. Rekeying keeps the existing lock bodies but makes old keys stop working, which is usually the fastest way to regain key control.

Greenlaw Lock and Key often recommends starting with one question: do you trust every copy of every key that may exist? If the answer is no, rekeying or replacement should be near the top of the move-in list.

Why is rekeying important after buying or renting a place?

You usually do not know how many keys are out there. Previous owners, tenants, relatives, contractors, cleaners, neighbors, and real estate contacts may have had copies at some point.

Even if everyone was honest, keys are easy to forget about. A spare may still be in a drawer, glove box, lockbox, or desk. Rekeying removes that uncertainty because the old key pattern no longer operates the lock.

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing?

Rekeying changes the internal pins or wafers so the lock works with a new key. The door hardware stays in place.

Replacing means removing the existing lock and installing new hardware. That may include a new knob, lever, deadbolt, smart lock, or full handle set.

When is rekeying the better choice?

Rekeying is usually the better choice when the locks are in good shape, the doors close properly, and you like the existing hardware.

It can also be useful when you want multiple doors to use one key. If the locks are compatible, Greenlaw Lock and Key may be able to rekey them to one key for simpler daily use.

A typical residential lock cylinder uses 5 or 6 pin positions. Rekeying changes how those pins match the cuts on the key, which is why old keys stop working after the service.

When should locks be replaced instead?

Replacement is usually better when the hardware is loose, rusted, damaged, sticking badly, missing parts, or too low grade for the door it protects.

Replacement can also make sense if you want a different function. A bedroom knob, exterior knob, deadbolt, keypad, or smart lock all serve different roles. If the current lock does not match how the door is used, rekeying alone will not solve that.

Are smart locks a good reason to replace hardware?

Sometimes. Smart locks can add convenience, especially for families, rental properties, or businesses that need temporary codes. But they still need proper installation, strong physical hardware, and a door that aligns correctly.

A smart lock installed on a poorly aligned door can drain batteries faster or fail to lock reliably. Before choosing one, it is worth checking the door fit and actual lock function.

How fast should this be done after moving?

As soon as practical. Many people handle it within the first few days because move-in periods are when keys are most likely to be shared with movers, contractors, cleaners, family, or temporary helpers.

If you cannot do every door immediately, start with the main entry points. That usually means the front door, back door, garage entry, and any door connected to a shared space.

FAQ

Is rekeying cheaper than replacing locks?

Rekeying is often less expensive than replacing all the hardware because the existing lock bodies stay in place. Final pricing depends on the number of locks, lock type, and condition.

Do I need to rekey locks on a brand-new home?

It is still worth considering. Builders, contractors, agents, and vendors may have had access during construction or closing.

Can Greenlaw Lock and Key make several doors work with one key?

In many cases, yes. Greenlaw Lock and Key can check compatibility and rekey matching locks so one key works on multiple doors.
